AIRE mistakes: what every Italian abroad needs to avoid
Living outside Italy as an Italian citizen requires more than emotional connection, it also involves important legal responsibilities. One of them is registering with AIRE, the mandatory registry for Italians living abroad for more than 12 months. However, many citizens are unaware of this requirement or fail to keep their information updated, which can lead to bureaucratic issues.
One of the most common mistakes is not registering with AIRE or failing to update personal information such as address and marital status. Changes like moving to another city or country, marriage, divorce, or the birth of children must be reported to the Italian consulate to ensure compliance and access to rights.
Another frequently overlooked issue is the registration of civil acts, such as births and marriages performed abroad. Without proper registration, these documents are not legally recognized in Italy, which may affect citizenship transmission and other administrative processes. Additionally, many Italians abroad miss electoral correspondence, losing the opportunity to vote.
Being properly registered and updated in AIRE is not just a formality. It ensures access to consular services, document issuance, and voting rights, keeping the connection with Italy active and legally secure.
